World Seeks Stable Population and Stable Industrial Output per Person
2022
Silkscreen print, acrylic on paper, LED, electronics
53 x 53 cm
Taking the title from two of the nine scenarios initially modelled by MIT’s World3 computer program in 1972 and published in the report Limits to Growth, they are the two forecasts that have stood the test of time and proven to be fairly accurate and relevant after 50 years.
World Seeks Stable Population and Stable Industrial Output per Person far more optimistic, imagines a world where a series of restrictive policies see 8 billion people live with ‘high human welfare and a declining ecological footprint’.
The artworks reference the interdependent relationship humans have with nature and planet Earth’s resources, in an age of climate change and pressing issues. An LED placed on the screenprint is connected to a database and provides a simplified visualisation for each scenario.
